Web 2.0 In Simple Form

So what’s really is web 2.0?

Through my meetings and talk with people around me, I found out that most of them mistaken Social Media Marketing is about facebook, friendster, youtube, myspace.

Well, it is correct to the extend, but sites like facebook, friendster and myspace are consider Social Networking sites. While youtube is classified as content sharing site and so does is Hubpages and Squidoo.

So, to make you understand better, let’s dissect Web 2.0 in its simplest form.

Web 2.0, broadly can be divided into 4 quadrants. They are,

  1. Web Apps
  2. Social Bookmarking
  3. Social Networking
  4. Content Sharing

Web apps are web applications that run online. It can come in the form of Google Docs, widgets and some other application that you can found online.

Social bookmarking means a user are able to bookmark any pages, websites online that they like.

Social Networking here refers to website like friendster, facebook and myspace. These website network people together from around the globe.

Lastly, we have content sharing. Sites like Squidoo, Hubpages and Zimbio are content sharing sites. They allow people to post their content on to their website and participate among the community.

So as you can see, when we are talking about social media marketing, we are in fact talking only a fraction of web 2.0 -which is Social Networking.

In fact as a local business owner, you can actually particpate at least 2 parts of web 2.0 to promote your business to your targeted audience.
